Since we have a lot of it, I came up with the idea of making a lamp with some of the less rare pieces.

On a recent trip to Ikea, we found the GRÖNÖ table lamp in frosted glass that looked perfect for the project.

Step one was to glue the sea glass on. We normally go every year.

In the days leading up to the holiday, I wasn't feeling as jazzed about going as I usually am. I chalked that up to having mom on my mind and wanting to stay closer to home while she and her team make changes at home to make her comfortable.

Then I got really sick the day before we were to leave. A quick call and some fortunate refunds later, we were able to postpone our trip. So it has been a home-oliday, staying off the usual grid for the most part and having some needed time away from work. Day trips have been on the agenda. In the photo above, you can see how serene Sasamat Lake is at this time of year.

Living Life

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3Hn1nI2936Q/TqYUH86NJfI/AAAAAAAAA6Y/ipSgZkm_XxY/s400/5295085727_682a9a7fd6_b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5667239307934246386" />As I mentioned in a previous post, my Mom has been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. The last while since she first became sick has been difficult for Mom and her circle of family and friends.

Obviously, much of what is happening is private, but I thought that there must be many other people going through similar experiences and maybe it helps to know that we are not alone.

As a son, I am accustomed to traveling to Mom's house and fixing all the things on her "list" while I visit. Installing lights, repairing dryer vents, cleaning things and other minor household projects. It makes me feel really good when I can help out and make things easier. I really want to "fix" this lung cancer too, but I can't. I suppose that is what a lot of people in this position feel.

Life doesn't always teach you things when you want it to. We all read quotes on living life to the fullest and not wasting your days, but cancer in the family brings the reality of such statements to the front of your mind. I don't have anything poignant to say that will make this all better. All I know is that it really is true that none of us live forever and we don't ever know what the future will hold.

What remains is the kindness and love that we give each other. I will try my best not to waste time in my life with things that don't matter and give more time to things that do.

Gearing Up

Here is a picture of "Coach Mom" during a break from my ride up Haleakala in Maui. Just the two of us.

Recently, I took my oldest son on a trip to Manning Park. He is within a couple years of the same age as I was back then. Soon I plan to take my youngest son there too.

Manning Park, especially Lightning Lakes, is one of my favourite places in BC. I'm pleased to have so many fond memories of time spent there with my Mom and Dad.

And let's face it, my fashion choices, hairstyle, moustache and glasses were obviously ahead of their time.

Pandas After Earthquake

<img style="float:left; Not the kind that get you into nightclubs ahead of the line, but I'll take my connections any day.

I got thinking about my connections this week. Partly because I will soon be on vacation with one of my favorite connections, my wife Leanne. The other reason is that I'm not that comfortable flying. In my life, I have a strict "no freaking out" policy, so I tackle my fears head-on. I was also once afraid of water and became a triathlete partly to get over that. Now I LOVE the water, especially lakes.

Part of the deal with getting more comfortable on a plane is to find a sense of connectedness back on terra firma. This is something I learned from SOAR (which I highly recommend if you are at all fearful of flying). The best part is that I use this technique in other times in life. When I am racing triathlon or buried under a pile of work or whenever the stress level gets high, I focus on the people that really matter to me. My wife, my sons and my mom. I have mental pictures of my favorite times with all of them. This is what connects me back to reality.

After all, your loved ones are the reason you do most of what you do. The more time you spend "connected", the better. Even when you are miles away.

I am known among my friends for a mental Rolodex full of facts of questionable usefulness. One of these areas of "expertise" is birds. I can assure you that I did not take up this hobby for the cool factor. It is a fairly geeky pastime after all.

Many years ago, my dad got into birding and I quickly realized that if I wanted to hang out with him, I'd better tag along on his many bird finding expeditions. At first, I was totally bored, but eventually we saw some cool-looking and often colorful birds that I didn't know were in my area.

Next I discovered that serious birders have serious equipment, so the gadget geek in me got all excited and dropped six grand on binoculars, spotting scope and camera equipment. I have never looked back.

Since my dad passed away a little over four years ago, birds hold an even more important place in life for me. I think he would be proud that I continue to carry the torch.

For you naysayers, this is a great hobby. Wherever I ride, run, swim or vacation, there are birds to see. My view of the world usually has wings in it.

Olympic Torch Relay

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wtJXX2w123w/S3Hsc4G-WkI/AAAAAAAAAOM/0IfEwKhpnbE/s320/Olympic-Torch-046.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436386206055029314" />

See a slideshow here.

Mew at Venue in Vancouver

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wtJXX2w123w/SyNItX6uaaI/AAAAAAAAANc/rcdEHXMBlks/s320/IMG00011-20091211-2048.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414251121381108130" />

Went to see Mew at Venue on Granville Street. Seeing all the bike racks on cars, wetsuit clad athletes in the lake and race packages in people’s hands made me feel a nervous knot in my stomach. We parked the car and I made my way to pick up my race package. I felt as though I was enlisting, and to a certain extent, I suppose I was. The coolest part was getting my wristband. I remembered how in previous years, I looked at people who were wearing their wristbands and thought, “Wow, they’re doing Ironman.”

Off to our stuck-in-the-seventies hotel, I proceeded to feel nervous for two days. I spent most of my time with Leanne and our friend Keith, who was as nervous as I was. We went over every detail of our assortment of race bags and checked every conceivable part on our bikes. Almost every friend that was also doing the race looked nervous; some looked downright strange. We all deal with butterflies differently. By the time Saturday night came around, I felt amazingly calm. There was nothing more I could do at that point, so I just relaxed and fell asleep. Before I nodded off, I wrote myself a note, “Drink 2 bottles of Gatorade before the start.” The last thing I wanted was to start off dehydrated.

Four in the morning is such a rude time to hear an alarm clock. The first thing I did was start in on bottle one of Gatorade and a bowl of cereal. By 5 o’clock, nature stops made, Leanne drove us to transition.

First came the body numbering, and then the drop off of the special needs bags, then the pumping of the tires. It looked pretty funny to see hundreds of people all pumping up their tires at the same time. I drank another Gatorade. After waiting in the obligatory line for the porta-potty, it was wetsuits on and time to go!

I lined up way over to the left to await the cannon blast that would start the race. When it did go off, I just waded into the water slowly and didn’t actually start swimming for a full minute. I tried to find feet to draft off of, but there was a lot of flailing going on so I just found an open spot and got comfortable. The swim felt really easy and I was having a lot of fun. I waved to the divers and thanked the volunteers in kayaks. I wasted a bit of time with this and stopping to sight and clear my goggles, but it was fun at the time. As I reached shore, I was ecstatic. Considering that I’d only been swimming for a year and a half, I was thrilled that I’d made it through the swim so easily and twenty minutes faster than I expected.

In transition, I took my time changing and then had another Gatorade before I pulled out my bike and headed out of transition. I stopped to take a picture of the crowd and they all cheered.

Pedaling up Main Street, I was buoyed by the screaming crowd. As I got out of town and along Skaha Lake, my stomach started doing strange things. It hurt, I was nauseous and everything I was drinking was stuck in my stomach and not going anywhere. I made the decision to sit up, slow down and keep sipping, hoping whatever was bugging me would go away. Unfortunately, other than a brief period in the middle of the bike course, the discomfort never did go away. Looking back now, I regret the amount and the timing of my “dehydration prevention” earlier in the day. I kept plodding along and my muscles felt okay, even on Richter pass, and I’m no hill specialist. Without getting into great detail, I was not getting near enough nutrition and hydration into my body, so I was becoming increasingly worried about finishing. I barely touched the food in my special needs bag. As I approached the Yellow Lake climb, I was met by a thunderstorm, complete with pelting cold rain and brutal headwinds. It was a lot more work to get up this section than any of the rest of the course. Leanne was soaked waiting for me at the top of Twin Lakes. She took one look at me and asked if I thought I was going to continue. I said, “I WILL finish”, trying to convince myself to keep going. I was supporting a charity and I didn’t want to let them down either but when I got to transition, I wondered if my day was over.

I went to the medical tent to explain my situation to the doctor. They checked me out and felt I was okay to continue, so I headed off on the run, determined to walk if necessary, and walk I did.

By now I was a lot warmer and in pretty good spirits. I met some other people reduced to walking and they were entertaining, so considering the tummy troubles, I was having a really good time. Jeff, one of my walking buddies, remarked how many people I knew coming back in. I explained that I was their bike coach, to which he replied, “You must be a really good coach, ‘cause they’re all beating you.” I probably should have felt insulted, but that really made me laugh. I saw my mom, dad and Leanne at the run turnaround. That was a definite spirit lifter. Apparently they had been cheering on the Yellow Lake hill, but in my delirium, I didn’t see them (Sorry!). Six and a half hours is a long walk, but it went by surprisingly fast. It was amazing how many people stay and cheer for people long after the sun goes down. Many of my tri-club buddies cheered me on when they could have been drinking beer back at their hotels. Thanks to you all!

I mustered a run down Lakeshore Drive for my big finish. Leanne was there; Keith and many other friends were there as I completed my longer than expected, but infinitely satisfying journey.

I am an Ironman!

Sucking in the Roadies

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 295px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wtJXX2w123w/Skk-6Cy8oLI/AAAAAAAAAJU/06cYVrSyInA/s400/CDA1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5352878799010439346" />
I write this tongue-in-cheek since many of my good friends are road racers and I have shared many a ride with them. However, I have not and do not road race. I will do the odd time trial, but mostly I race triathlon. My roadie friends love to give the triathlete a hard time, since most of them would drown if thrown in a lake and couldn't run to catch the bus. There are a couple of exceptions, but for the most part, this is true.

I occasionally defend triathletes, trying to find a reason why some carry more bottles than a pack mule ever could. I also try to highlight the triathletes I know who are good bike handlers, but then I see some person with aerobars weaving along Marine Drive. We haven't got a hope.

Which brings me to the purpose of this post. The thought of being passed by a triathlete is more than most roadies can take. I can't think of a time when I passed someone with drop bars on my tri bike that they didn't attempt to pass me soon after.

Knowing this fact, I like to play "suck in the roadie." Case in point, a few of us are riding along and are steadily gaining on the two matching roadies up ahead. No doubt they were just noodling along after a dozen repeats up Cypress. Either way, we hung back for a bit to assess our plan of action. Finally, we decide it is time to pass to see if we can make them chase us down.

Now if you choose to play this game, remember you must pass with authority, so we did, keeping the speed about 15 km/h faster than we had been riding. Dig deep and hope they are trying to catch you. Sure enough, after riding the entire way out to Iona at breakneck speed, I look back and see that they are not too far back. As I ease up at the end of the road, they fly past me, no doubt thinking they'd won.

But since we were the one's who knew the rules of this game and the name of the game is "sucking in the roadies", I beg to differ, we most definitely won.

Strawberries

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 306px; height: 296px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wtJXX2w123w/SjQs5R1tlTI/AAAAAAAAAJE/vfHS_UQBFRM/s400/strawberry-season.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5346948020148475186" />
Just got back from picking up some local strawberries. Due to her long-standing involvement with our National Wrestling Teams, she had the privilege of participating in the Beijing Olympics as their physiotherapist and a member of Team Canada’s Health Care Team. Here is her story:

The Games were a magical time. And so easy, it seemed. As any who watched on TV already knows, the village and venues were impressive. Almost every detail really seemed to have been anticipated and planned for by our Chinese hosts.

Our Canadian Health Care Team was a great mix of “newbies” and veterans and was a cohesive and fun bunch. I think we did our best for our athletes and we fulfilled the important Canadian tradition of hosting the Games-end medical party, attended by medical colleagues from several other Olympic delegations.

The Olympics were my fourth trip to China in the twelve months prior to the Olympics. I continued to find Beijing a fascinating combination of familiar (Starbucks) and different.

I have been part of the Wrestling Canada community since 2001, traveling regularly with their National Teams to international tournaments. When the time came to plan for Beijing, my name was put forward to the Canadian Olympic Committee by the wrestling team for consideration to Canada’s Health Care Team. It was an exciting day for me last February, when I received the official phone call inviting me onto the Health Care Team, with my assignment to be, of course, wrestling.

For this Olympics, Canada qualified wrestlers in all 4 womens’ and 5 of the 7 mens’ weight classes. Given that only 16 female and 20 male wrestlers qualify to compete in each weight class at the Olympics, qualifying that number of Canadian wrestlers truly was an impressive achievement in itself. This was a classy, hard-working group of Canadian athletes who represented our country well.

The Olympic Games are a culmination of many years of commitment and passion for these athletes, coaches, their families and communities. So much preparation and dreaming for a very small window of time. At an Olympics, the highs are incredibly high and the lows painfully low. I really respect each of our athletes for putting themselves out onto the world stage for all of us to see as they face the most important event of their careers. So few get to be Olympic champions, yet most still handle themselves with gratitude and humility.

I’m sure it’s no surprise, then, that my personal Games highlight was the thrilling performance of our Canadian womens’ wrestling team. They have always been such successful athletes and wonderful people, yet have flown somewhat “under the radar” of more known and traditional sports. Over the years, we have shared many goals, laughs and articles of clothing, as MY luggage is often lost by Air Canada on our trips.

Truthfully, the thrill of watching my friends become Olympic gold and bronze medalists, 30 minutes apart on their competition day, is difficult to give adequate description to. The competition was so exciting, heightened by the fact that our ladies helped lead Canada out of our “drought”. But for me, the most impacting part of that competition was seeing the desire and belief in oneselves that those athletes demonstrated on the wrestling mat that evening. Suffice to say, I think that day will always be a highlight in my life!

An unexpected highlight of the Games for me was participating in the Closing Ceremonies, crazy uniform and all. We were actually one of the best-dressed countries that evening! Really, we were! Exactly as it looks on TV, it is a special and powerful feeling of the world coming together at the Closing Ceremonies. To me, it felt like a celebration of all the journeys that brought each of us to Beijing.

The enthusiasm of the Chinese volunteers for us, even after 16 long days, was touching. Many were still saying, in their broken English, “Welcome to Beijing”! After the Ceremonies ended, they formed a long, long human tunnel of smiles, clapping and “thank you’s” through which we exited the stadium out to the waiting buses. I lingered as long as I could - it was difficult for me to leave that moment in time behind.

As Team Canada assembled itself prior to the Closing Ceremony, Marnie McBean had reminded us all that, regardless of result or role, we had all been part of an event that had brought a lot of inspiration and enjoyment to so many around the world. A fitting end to a very special time!

Lance Armstrong responds to being called the "cancer of the peloton"

I Propose a Font Ban

I hate some fonts. We all have our hobbies and vocations and usually the people we rub shoulders with in each of these are separate. Then, every once in awhile, you meet someone from your hobby group at work and it is then that your worlds collide. This once seemed traumatic to me. Do I want my friends to see the "work" me? Do I want my coworkers to see the "athlete" me? At some point I decided I didn't care. I enjoy my life immensely, so I don't mind if my worlds collide a bit. With that in mind, I've updated the links to my other sites. Top athletes aren't just stronger or faster physically, they are also strong mentally. I have my list of top three areas to improve upon and I'm tackling them one at a time. I've already seen positive effects. Give the book a read if you do triathlon and see if it helps you too.

Priorities

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 330px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wtJXX2w123w/SWwyYZrtrBI/AAAAAAAAACI/NYd3YuJHXas/s400/duty_calls.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290659057045974034" />

Don't Die of Embarrassment

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 386px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wtJXX2w123w/SWpbKYR3UtI/AAAAAAAAACA/oakoTrM56WU/s400/Untitled-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5290140946174268114" />
After lung cancer, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths for men and women. Regular screening, beginning when they are 50, or earlier for people at higher risk, can detect the disease in its most treatable stages and may also prevent colorectal cancer by identifying pre-cancerous polyps for removal.

Screening for colorectal cancer information from Canadian Cancer Society.

Even though it is a bit embarrassing to talk about, I am at a higher risk with a family history, so I am having a colonoscopy this week.
